Τhe Nearly Zero Energy Hotels (neZEH) initiative co-funded by the European Commission, will participate to the VI edition of the FITUR Green forum, falling this year under the topic “Towards Sustainable Consumption and Production in the Tourism Sector”.
On January 29th, neZEH will be opening the morning session on “Destination and Sustainable Accommodation: The Reconversion of the Hotel Sector”.
The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and CREARA energy experts, two out of the ten neZEH partners, will present how and why this European initiative has been working for almost two years on encouraging the hospitality industry to transform existing hotels into nearly zero energy buildings.
The presentation will also count on the participation of the Hotel Rural Amalurra which has been selected among 85 European hotels to become one of the neZEH Pilot Hotels. The hotel will share the social, environmental and economic reasons leading their commitment to invest in sustainability.
Accommodation represents about 21% of total tourism sector CO2 emissions. In this light, the neZEH initiative aims at accelerating the rate of refurbishment of existing Small and Medium Enterprise hotels - representing 90% of the hospitality industry - into nearly zero energy buildings.
FITURGreen, co-organized by the Hotel Institute for Technology (ITH), the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and FITUR, aims to bring innovation and sustainability to the tourism sector, helping hotels to boost their competitiveness. FITURGreen is conceived under the framework of FITUR the International Tourism Trade Fair from January 28 to February 1, 2015.
